Our Structure & Finances
The Council for Global Equality is a fiscally sponsored project of Community Initiatives, a California-based nonprofit organization with 501c(3) status. A small portion of the Council’s work includes Congressional advocacy, which is monitored under the 501(h) election that Community Initiatives maintains. Members of the Council have come together in support of the Council’s mission, and an active Advisory Committee helps to guide the Council’s work, but all fiduciary decision-making authority pertaining to the Council rests with Community Initiatives. Unless a member’s name or logo appears in conjunction with a particular statement issued by the Council, no endorsement of the statement by any member should be implied.
As a fiscally sponsored project, the Council’s finances are officially reported as part of Community Initiative’s annual report and audited financial statements. The Council does not have separately audited statements or annual reports. The Council has been generously funded primarily by the following philanthropic institutions: Open Society Foundations, Wellspring Philanthropies, and the Oak Foundation. In addition, the Council receives modest annual membership fees from its organizational members. Funds for lobbying-related activities are segregated and tracked separately. The annual budget for the Council has averaged approximately around $1M, with 85% of those expenses going to its program work.
